SALLY PLOOF HUNTER MEMORIAL LIBRARY ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR
(BLACK RIVER, NEW YORK) – The Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library Board of Trustees has named Shawn Hunt as the new Director of the library. He began this position on January 1 2024.
Shawn Hunt has previously been employed by the Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library as the Assistant Director from 2017 until 2023.
Shawn Hunt has lived in Black River since a child and attended schools in the Carthage Central School District. He then furthered his education with an Associate’s Degree from Jefferson Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Potsdam, and a Master’s Degree from the University of Phoenix.
“I look forward to this new challenge,” says Shawn Hunt. “I’m really excited for the plans that I have in store for the library, the patrons, and the village of Black River as well.”
Former Director Mary Louise Hunt will be stepping into a newly created position of Programming Director. In this position she will be in charge of creating and running all of the libraries programs. These include Storytime, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and many other programs.

The Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library was relocated and named in 2007. Previously it was known as the Black River Free Library. The library was originally founded in 1915 and was located on Leray St in Black River. Since then it has moved to other locations before its current location next to the Maple St Park.
The Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library aims to be THE connection point of choice for our community’s information, entertainment, and social needs.
