CHILD BEHAVIOR AND SUPERVISION POLICY

The Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library has a responsibility to provide an environment that is safe and comfortable for every patron who appropriately uses its services and facilities.

The Library Board of Trustees and Staff are eager for children to use the library and welcome those who do so.  Service to children who are both neurotypical and neurodiverse is an important part of the library’s mission.  This library is free and open to unaccompanied children who are independent enough to use the resources of the library for recreation, information, and education.

WHAT AGE REQUIRES SUPERVISION?

However, children under the age of NINE (9) MUST be accompanied and remain with their parent/caregiver.  Children ages TEN (10) and above may be in the library unaccompanied.  The staff of the library may however ask for parents to remain with their children regardless of age due to potential safety and behavioral issues.

UNATTENDED CHILDREN

The following policy has been designed to communicate the Library Board’s concern for the safety and welfare of the children it serves.

  • At ALL TIMES, caregivers are responsible for the conduct and safety of their children on the library premises.
  • Children are expected to adhere to the same standards of conduct expected of adults.  All library users are required to respect library property (including loanable devices and decorations around the library) and to act in a manner appropriate to the use and function of the library.  Children who are not using the library appropriately will be asked to leave the library along with their parent/guardian.
  • All children are expected to clean up all items they may have used during their time at the library.  The parent/guardian accompanying them must make sure that there is no items left out, due to a potential slip or fall hazard.
